The Unplugged Studio
Carri Cooper has been working with children in both volunteer and paid positions for over 25 years. She holds an English Degree with a creative writing emphasis and a minor in education from the University of Arkansas. Carri is a graduate of the Meisner Technique Studio's formal training in San Francisco, a two year intensive in the craft of acting as presented by Sanford Meisner, with teachers Jim Jarrett and Melissa Thompson Esaia.
The draw for both writing and acting came from the belief that art created from a place of truth can literally change a person. Books, movies, and other media have the ability to make someone feel understood - to feel less alone. In addition to having fun, developing as an artist is a dive into self discovery, building empathy for others, and learning to trust our instincts.
Sanford Meisner defined acting as living truthfully under imaginary circumstances. This means instead of telling our artists how to feel, we teach them how to get to that feeling through exercises that allow the truth to come to the surface. This develops a belief that who they are is enough, which allows a response from a genuine place- to find their truth and speak it. This ability to be present builds confidence and creates a safe space to grow artistically and as a human being.
I am grateful you've found our studio. As a mother of three, I know the importance of choosing a space for your child that is warm and nurturing. I believe with absolute certainty the quote from Meisner, "Every single moment has a meaning all its own." I lead with that in my interactions with children and recognize the influence a good teacher can have. It is my goal to have everyone who comes into the studio leave knowing they are valued and loved.
