The Unplugged Studio
The Unplugged Studio is a place to learn, create, and grow into the healthiest version of yourself. Wherever you are in your journey we have a place for you.
The purpose of arts education is not to produce more artists, though that is a byproduct. The real purpose of arts education is to create complete human beings capable of leading successful and productive lives in a free society. ~Dana Gioia
Our teachings are based on Sanford Meisner, one of the first teachers of the craft of acting in the United States. Meisner based his exercises and teachings in the belief that "acting is reacting." This means the focus is not on ourselves, but on reacting to what is coming at us in our environment, what others around us are feeling and saying, and even noticing the slightest changes in fellow actor's facial expression and body language to recognize their need. This is why studying the craft of acting nurtures social skills, empathy, and the ability to work together as a true ensemble, a team.
Acting is vulnerable. The recognition of this is very important when teaching the craft of acting, because only when one feels safe will there be authenticity in the performance.
The Unplugged Studio offers instruction in all aspects of theatre including: acting, voice and movement, and production and design. In addition to our classes our students have the opportunity to work with professional actors in the community in our regional productions.
Every single person who comes in the door is coming with different experiences and backgrounds. The two most impactful quotes from Meisner are, "This world needs you," and "You're enough." When you come to study with us at The Unplugged Studio, it is our intention for you to know you make a difference in this world. You make this world better. And, this world needs you.
